The best

Fun, but of limited value

The pick-up lines are good for an initial laugh. The biggest disadvantage I found: phrases in languages that dont use a Latin alphabet (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, ...) are displayed only in their native character set, with no pinyin or romanji or other latinized form. So its impossible to read the phrase unless you already know how to read the writing system of the language. You can always listen to the recorded audio of each phrase, but usually its uttered too quickly to hear all the phonemes, especially in long phrases.

Its ok

Has been good to me so far!! I love it.. Easy to a assess and understand how it works

I love this app.

Nice work! Its very handy to search phrases and easy to check out the pronunciations. Each pronunciations are accurate as far as I know, but some phrases are of doubtful accuracy in masculine or in feminine or in intonations. UI is considered well, full sized view for the phrases are useful in noisy places. More expressions and sortable list are desired.

Very disappointing

This app worked fine for 4 weeks and then the voice function stopped working completely. Other reviews say the same thing. Buying this was a waste of my money. Dont let this happen to you.

I updated--now it doesnt work.

A wonderful app for learning languages. I shouldnt have updated it; it wont open now!

The sound doesnt work

The sound stopped working shortly after I started using this app. Not just one this one but all the lingopal apps I have. Otherwise this was a pretty great app. Probably going to delete because this isnt very useful without sound.

Serves a limited purpose.

Would get a perfect rating if it had phonetic spelling and was an actual translator... I mean there are 32 gig version Iphones now, our we can handle a large database download so there is no reason it cannot be done. This is convenient enough for small things but is very limited.

Needs some work but fun app

This is a nice application and has a lot of potential if a couple of things would be fixed or enhanced: 1. If you choose male or female the application seems only to use a female voice. 2. Trying the application choosing male gender some phrases were said as a female would say it. 3. Speaks to fast. 4. Does not seem to support cut and paste which would be great for emails and text messages

Missing insults

I downloaded the free Italian app and it has x-rated insults so why does this app not have the x-rated insults? Please add in an update. 5 stars until all insults are added!

Very good, but could be better.

My biggest complaint with this app is the fact that the phrases are not spelled out phonetically in the speakers language/lettering. For example: If you speak English and are looking up a phrase in Russian, the phrase will be written in Arabic. This is handy, to be sure, but having the phrase spelled out phonetically using the English alphabet ALONGSIDE the Cryllic (or other translated language) would be a fantastic addition and would immediately make this a 5-star application. Additionally, echoing many of the other comments, the spoken phrases are often too fast. This fact, combined with the selection of phrases, make this much more of a travellers companion of essentials to get by with, rather than an application that can be more readily used to actually learn the fundamentals of a given language. This is a shame, since it could very easily be both. I am in Iraq, working alongside people who speak Swahili, Russian, Turkish, Tagalog, and Arabic, and had high hopes that this application would allow me to learn enough of each language (except Swahili, which is not supported) to establish basic communications and simple phrases. I still think it will allow me to do so -- but at a much slower pace. If you are considering buying this application, I suggest trying the (currently) free Italian version to see how it works.

Leave your printed phrasebooks at home!

On my last trip to Europe, I took the Lonely Planet Western Europe and Eastern Europe phrasebooks with me. Together, they covered about 12 languages, but they also added a couple of pounds to my backpack and cost twenty bucks. After you spend weeks trekking around Europe, you start to resent every extra pound in your pack. So this app is a welcome arrival. 44 languages from all over the world, and only 10 bucks. Compared to printed phrasebooks, its a steal. Im about to embark on a months-long global trip, and this little gem will enable me to leave the paper books at home. My only complaint is that it doesnt have phonetic spellings in addition to the actual text. The audio pronunciations are great - try doing THAT with your printed phrasebook! - but there are situations in life when using the audio is not practical or polite. Having phonetic spellings would be very advantageous in those situations. Yes, there are some things this app doesnt do. It doesnt translate ad-hoc phrases you type in...but neither does a printed phrasebook. It doesnt systematically teach you a new language...but neither does a printed phrasebook. It is what it is - a resource to help you survive common everyday situations in a variety of countries worldwide. Judged by that standard, this app is a valuable and well-implemented tool. It does exactly what it claims to do, and it does it with style. Well done!

Amazing App!

Both this app and the company behind it are excellent! I was reading through older reviews, one which stated this app didnt include all the categories of the individual, $.99 apps, and I emailed Lingopal at about midnight Eastern time. I was surprised when not long after I recieved a very friendly email explaining that this wasnt true and that the review was outdated. There were several replies and answers to my questions, along with well-wishes in my travels. Definitely the best customer support I ever received! As for the app itself, I find it to be high-quality for the languages I understand. The speakers are clear and the app is easy to navigate and read. For all the languages it supports, it was well worth the $9.99! I have some suggestions that would be amazing to see in this app, but seeing as this app is more for travelers and I have a tendency to want to really learn the language as well, some might not suit this apps intent: -A button to view the text phonetically would be great, perhaps next to the play button in the list. This would be useful for languages such as Japanese or Korean where one cannot read those languages. -An option to hear the phrases said at a slower pace would be helpful as well, to aid with pronunciation. This could also be a button next to the play button. -More basic vocabulary would be nice. For example, a list of words for clothing, parts of the body, weather, colors, etc. -Id love to see the phrase "I love you" added. For all the "flirty" words this app provides, few seem all that serious and this would be a nice phrase to add. Of course, additional phrases of any sort are always welcome! I was told updates will be coming within the next few months, so Im pretty excited to see how this app is improved! You wont be dissappointed buying this app. =)

Nice but...

Bought the $0.99 Cantonese version. Hilarious but certain phrases are way off mark. Voice acting is acceptable but feels dead at times. Some tones are wrong but this is forgivable especially for a tonal language where the actual tone may not be perceivable or unstandardized. However, the multi-language version is a cookie cutter application and you should be aware that the phrases in the target language may be very different from your starting language. Especially in the less serious phrase sections as well as for languages that make heavy use of idioms or culturally specific metaphors.

Would be the bomb IF...

they would write the interpretations in English (Romanized) so if you cant completely understand the reader you can at least try to figure it out phonetically... ALSO, there are some gender differences - the Thai section for example, is spoken by a woman and she uses the feminine pronouns in her readings. Someone not already familiar with the language would end up looking foolish. Lastly, it would be great if u could listen to the speakers without having to put your headphones on. Other than that great concept, I practice almost everday!

Awesome

Great for conversational application and refresher

For someone that travels alot

This app is very accurate, its easy to use. I can tell that in most languages is very accurate.

Why the pop-ad on the PAID version?

Great app in general but whats the deal with the pop up saying "still using the lite version? Pay .99 to get the full version"? It happens every time you change languages. Fix that and Ill give it a better rating.

It does what it says it will do.

Cant beat this app for the price, minus the pop up it would be a perfect app.

Cool app, just one thin though

Ive been told that I sound robotic when saying the lines in Cantonese as I learn from lingopal. But people seem to understand what I am saying nonetheless.
